Sat, 21 Oct 2006 12:43:17 -0400 http://www.redshoe.cc/html/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=83 I recently took advantage of a lull in my consulting workload to do some housekeeping o?n my play computer.  I use the term 'play' loosely because although I do most of my gaming o?n that rig, it's also my multimedia workhorse; housing my music, digital photos and home movies.   To the point, my computer hadn't been reformatted in 2 years & things were a mess.Ever since I got my home theatre PC going, I'd been itching to try Linux again o?n another box. I had an older rig sitting around that I'd installed a few different distributions o?n just to kick the tires & see what I liked.  Based o?n what I'd experienced, I decided to take the plunge and use Kubuntu, the KDE version of Ubuntu Linux, as the primary operating system o?n my play box.  As it happened, I couldn't ditch Windows XP all together though.  A lot of games I play don't quite work or don't work at all in Linux. So this time, I set up a dual boot, giving me the option to drop back to Windows for gaming goodness.  So how did Kubuntu Linux stack up for me?  Click o?n thru to read the details. Wed, 12 Apr 2006 13:19:03 -0400 http://www.redshoe.cc/html/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=79 Even before we had Evan, I knew that I wanted to stay away from the jars-o-baby food if we could.  I mean really - would you wanna feed your kids anything you wouldn't eat yourself?  Jar baby food reminds me of canned food which is usually gross & devoid of nutrients (especially the vegetables).  So, I try to whip up stuff from fresh or frozen items when I can.My stick blender has really been a boon to baby food making.  Easy clean-up & ours came with just the right amount of accessories.  The traditional "jug" blenders are a pain to clean & stow and as far as I'm concerned, the o­nly thing they're good for is making frozen margaritas (which you should drink on the rocks anyways).I've added a couple of baby food recipes that my stick blender works wonderfully for, though you could probably use a food processor or jug blender if you like doin' dishes.  The 1st is a 'fruit smoothie'  that Evan really digs.  Cinnamon applesauce was his fav until he sampled the smoothie.  The second is a Chicken & Rice recipe that I chanced upon when I accidentally used sushi rice instead of plain ol' white.  The boy is kind of picky about his food texture rite now & this stuff works for him every time.I'll try to add a few more babyfood recipes as we go & if you have any baby food  recipes of your own, I'd love to hear about them. I have found o­ne escape, it's called 'The Kingdom of Loathing'. It's a free, web based adventure game where the goals are to collect meat, eat, & consume tasty beverages, all while slaying scary monsters.  The design is truely... err... I really can't complain (much); they have the most complete coverage for all the places we go & there's no roaming when we head out west to Hays.  After every 2 years, they give you a $100 credit towards a new phone.  Well, rather than sit o­n that $100, I figured I'd better use it so that we can start the 2-year cycle again.This time around, I gave up my ol' T720 for the Motorola V710.  This phone has it all - sweet speakerphone, excellent voice dial, megapixel still & video camera, web browser, MP3 player, bluetooth, and expansion thru a trans flash card.  ...Problem is, Verizon neuters the phone to make the user sign o­n with their pay-to-play services like picture messaging, wallpapers & ringtones.Well, I for o­ne think that if the phone does it & I paid for it, that I should be able to use it.  Seems I'm in the same camp with alot of other people.  Me & Wenke (who is a recent Verizon convert) have assembled a list of links that are essential to getting the most out of the V710.  Just go to the Web Links portion of the website or,Click here to start learning how to hack your V710. I was begining to think i'd never get it done.  I was hindered by 3 false starts & some sync issues with the analog vs the digital material (you learn why the pros use timecodes).The final product is 2 discs <hint> sure coulda used a dual layer dvd burner </hint>; the first disc is the entire mass (whew!).  The second disc is all "bonus" material.  A music/photo montage & selected scenes from the reception.If anyone wants a copy, let me know.  Gotta shout out to Andy, Cliff, Sam, & Baddogg for the all the footage they took for me.  I truely couldn't have done it without you, 'cuz I don't think my wife would have let me film it myself. It was a good time & I actually remember most of it  =DClick here to see the pictures.If anyone has more pictures of the event they'd like to share, let me know & i'll put 'em up.The next weekend, the J-side of the fam was gracious enough to throw a shower for or upcoming arrival.Here are the pictures from the shower.I want to thank everyone sofar for the tremendous amount of support and well wishes we've received.  It makes me happy to think that the person you're bringing into the world will be surrounded by such good people. :-) Sat, 12 Feb 2005 09:43:49 -0500 http://www.redshoe.cc/html/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=63 Since I've starting using Google's Gmail, i've found that it's pretty handy.  I dig the conversation-style structure,  the spam filtering's pretty good, it's got POP forwarding now, and who can complain about a gigabyte of space.  I run 2 webmail accounts presently (Yahoo mail is the other), and although Gmail is still technically in beta, it's better in many respects than existing webmail services.  Gmail is by invitation o­nly & they o­nly hand out referrals to beta members.  Presently, I've got referrals to give (6 at the time of this writing).  So, if anyone wants a Gmail account, let me know.Also of note -  Picasa, Google's photo organization software is up to version 2 & its still free.  With the upgrade, they've added support for Gmail (duh.) and the ability to make a 'gift cd' of photos to give to friends  & family.  I can see that last function coming in handy in the next 8 weeks or so =). Click here to get Picasa 2.
