In the pursuit of saving time for things besides maintaining a website, we've decided to simplify things a bit. The main site page can now be found here.Oh, & we'll leave this up a bit for posterity & practicality. I need to find a good solution for the ol' recipe book as well.

My summer of penguins.

I recently took advantage of a lull in my consulting workload to do some housekeeping o?n my play computer. I use the term 'play' loosely because although I do most of my gaming o?n that rig, it's also my multimedia workhorse; housing my music, digital photos and home movies. To the point, my computer hadn't been reformatted in 2 years & things were a mess.Ever since I got my home theatre PC going, I'd been itching to try Linux again o?n another box. I had an older rig sitting around that I'd installed a few different distributions o?n just to kick the tires & see what I liked. Based o?n what I'd experienced, I decided to take the plunge and use Kubuntu, the KDE version of Ubuntu Linux, as the primary operating system o?n my play box. As it happened, I couldn't ditch Windows XP all together though. A lot of games I play don't quite work or don't work at all in Linux. So this time, I set up a dual boot, giving me the option to drop back to Windows for gaming goodness. So how did Kubuntu Linux stack up for me? Click o?n thru to read the details.

RIP Shirley. 1993-2006

My dear Green Iguana spent 12 of the 13 years of her life with me. She started out as 'Wedge' 'cuz I thought she was a guy (that & I like Star Wars). As she got older, it was pretty apparent that she wasn't exhibiting male-type characters & the name just wasn't right anymore. Anj started calling her 'Shirley' & the name stuck.I'm comforted by the fact that she passed at an age that unfortunately not too many of her kind make it to, because they are treated as 'disposable'. I hope that a passerby reading this understands that the $20 you spend today on that cute little lizard could be a 13 year responsibility for a 4ft, 8lb presence. Be prepared for the committment.Oh, sure she never did alot, especially at the twilight of her life, but there's an empty space in the basement now; and she will be missed.Click 'read full article' to see a few pictures of my old college buddy.

If you haven't heard yet, the Dealy family is expecting a new addition this October. Angie had her sonogram appointment last week, and everything looks good - see for yourself!Everyone's excited, including future big-brother Evan, who recently has taken to saying "baby" in between his renditions of "Old MacDonald". I went ahead & put up a new album for him too. Check it out here.Oh, & if you're the type who prays, start wishin' for a girl. Dad's thinkin' that his limit might be 2, but he'd like to make that as indisputable as possible. If only those w/ a Y chromosome actually had a say in the whole affair. I think the seahorse might be the only critter that has that rap beat.

Kids gotta eat too

Even before we had Evan, I knew that I wanted to stay away from the jars-o-baby food if we could. I mean really - would you wanna feed your kids anything you wouldn't eat yourself? Jar baby food reminds me of canned food which is usually gross & devoid of nutrients (especially the vegetables). So, I try to whip up stuff from fresh or frozen items when I can.My stick blender has really been a boon to baby food making. Easy clean-up & ours came with just the right amount of accessories. The traditional "jug" blenders are a pain to clean & stow and as far as I'm concerned, the only thing they're good for is making frozen margaritas (which you should drink on the rocks anyways).I've added a couple of baby food recipes that my stick blender works wonderfully for, though you could probably use a food processor or jug blender if you like doin' dishes. The 1st is a 'fruit smoothie' that Evan really digs. Cinnamon applesauce was his fav until he sampled the smoothie. The second is a Chicken & Rice recipe that I chanced upon when I accidentally used sushi rice instead of plain ol' white. The boy is kind of picky about his food texture rite now & this stuff works for him every time.I'll try to add a few more babyfood recipes as we go & if you have any baby food recipes of your own, I'd love to hear about them.

Holy Crap! that's alot of TV!

Most people who know me know that I like to tinker w/ all things computer. Well, about 2 years ago (wow this story is overdue) I embarked on starting to put together my home theatre PC (htpc for short). You can check out the specs here; which I must say ain't too shabby for under $200 & some spare parts.Anyway, I chanced upon this beast while surfing today - 11 tuners & HD support! I guess if you have 4k to spend on an htpc, you can do that sorta thing; but is sure is somethin'.It looks like these guys went w/ Windows & Beyond TV to run their system, while my frugal self chose Linux-based MythTV, which I have to say has treated me quite well, once I got past the learning curve.Drop me a line if you ever feel like rolling your own htpc; I've amassed some great resources, & I've helped @ least one other person get one goin'.

Makin' Bierocks

We recently acquired a whole mess of beef in the deep freeze (Mark would proud). We got alot more ground beef than I really wanted, so I have to try to get creative with this stuff to appease the finicky ones in the house. Bierocks had a history of being consumed by the wife, so I thought I'd take a crack @ them. I'm not patient enough to do dough the old-fashioned way, so I scoured the web for a bread machine method for the dough. Nuthin'. So, after a little trial and error, I came up with something that was workable and palatable as well. So, if you're hankerin' for a bierock, here's my recipe. Give 'em a try!

...and we're baaaack!!

OK, so the site's been outta commission for a while. Sorry 'bout that. We're juggling a whole mess of stuff here now, so this was a most in-opportune time to fix the website. It's about 95% up to where I want it, but the rest of it's just nit-picky stuff, so no sense in keeping everyone waiting longer. To catch y'all up - I just started freelance GIS consulting @ the beginning of September & that's really been consuming quite a bit of time (a simpler GIS explanation here). The good news is that not only am I able to work from home so me & Evan can hang out, but I already have work with a firm by the name of Infinitec out of Hays. Our goal is to bring GIS to small local government in Kansas. Just the same, If you need any kind of GIS-type work done (government or otherwise), feel free to contact me at beau@dealygeo.com, & I'll see what I can do to help you. Oh, I'll let you know when I get that website up too.I hope that this upgrade has made the site easier to navigate & a bit more coherent. You'll notice that I've jumped on the syndication bandwagon & we now have links to the top stories on Wenke's, Luke's & Baddogg's blogs. Thanks for the content, fellas!Recipes have also been moved to the top of the page, where I hope they'll be a bit more accessible.I've also integrated the photo album into the main page, so as to keep one face for the site. I think it works better, but if you just can't stand it, there are still options to view the photo album in a separate window - which brings us to the photos.Yes, there are more pictures of Evan up now in the 'First Year' section, & as an extra treat, we've got all the pictures fit to print from Wenke's 2nd annual Halloween party.Enjoy, & if you have any feedback on the updated site, please drop me a line

What busy dads do for their game fix.

I've found plenty to keep me busy here @ home with Evan, but very little of it could be considered true 'leisure' time. I have found one escape, it's called 'The Kingdom of Loathing'. It's a free, web based adventure game where the goals are to collect meat, eat, & consume tasty beverages, all while slaying scary monsters. The design is truely... err... 'unique' & the story is always good for a few laughs. Most importantly, it only takes 30 minutes a day, which is perfect because you never know when the boy's morning nap is going to end.If you'd like to play as well, be sure to drop me a line in-game. My handle is 'Orzo' & I'm a pastamancer. I might even have some stuff to help you get started.See you in the KoL!!

New tricks for my new phone.

I've been a customer w/ Verizon wireless ever since we moved to Wichita. I really can't complain (much); they have the most complete coverage for all the places we go & there's no roaming when we head out west to Hays. After every 2 years, they give you a $100 credit towards a new phone. Well, rather than sit on that $100, I figured I'd better use it so that we can start the 2-year cycle again. This time around, I gave up my ol' T720 for the Motorola V710. This phone has it all - sweet speakerphone, excellent voice dial, megapixel still & video camera, web browser, MP3 player, bluetooth, and expansion thru a trans flash card. ...Problem is, Verizon neuters the phone to make the user sign on with their pay-to-play services like picture messaging, wallpapers & ringtones.Well, I for one think that if the phone does it & I paid for it, that I should be able to use it. Seems I'm in the same camp with alot of other people. Me & Wenke (who is a recent Verizon convert) have assembled a list of links that are essential to getting the most out of the V710. Just go to the Web Links portion of the website or,Click here to start learning how to hack your V710.

Pictures of the boy - You Asked for 'em, you got 'em.

It seems like whenever I talk to someone about my son, the question always arises, "When are you going to put more pictures up of Evan on your website?" Well, I'm not one to brag on my kid, but seeing as y'all want more pictures, & I'm taking them anyway, the least I can do is share. So, I've set up a new album in the gallery where we'll put selected moments from Evan's first year. I'll make an effort to update the same album at least once a month, so check back about that often if you wanna see more baby pictures.Click here to go to Evan's Album.

First off, raising a new baby ain't like dusting crops either. After the first couple of weeks, mom & I were due for a break. With a little help from Grandma Kuhn, Anj got a well deserved break & a chance to catch up with family, and me & Wenke took off for Indianapolis for the Star Wars Celebration 3 weekend. once we got to Indy, we donned our alter-egos of Luke Skywalker & Owen Lars, & rendezvoued with Han Solo, Chewbacca, Leia, & a somewhat yonger Luke. There was alot to see, & if you've never partied in a bar full of Imperial Stormtroopers, I highly reccommend it.The Pictures tell the story better than I, so...Click here for all the pictures. If y'all have some pictures to share from the celebration, send 'em my way & I'll get em up here.

Put your money to work for you (safely).

Last year, I chanced upon someone talking about ING Direct on a message board. ING Direct is an online way to save your money & because there's no brick & mortar building, they pass the savings onto you (read = higher interest rates). As of my writing this, a savings account pays 2.60% and CDs pay from 3.25% to 4.15%. Also of note: ING Direct accounts are FDIC insured up to $100,000 so it's totally safe (I did my homework 'cuz I was skeptical at first). As a plus, if you sign up on a referral, then everyone gets bonus money. For example, if you open a savings account, you'd receive $25 & since I referred you, I'd get $10.Send me an email if you would like a referral so you can start making mad green =)

Almost three years after our wedding, I finally completed our wedding video. It was delivered to Anj on her 25th birthday. Can you beleive it? I was begining to think i'd never get it done. I was hindered by 3 false starts & some sync issues with the analog vs the digital material (you learn why the pros use timecodes). The final product is 2 discs <hint> sure coulda used a dual layer dvd burner </hint>; the first disc is the entire mass (whew!). The second disc is all "bonus" material. A music/photo montage & selected scenes from the reception. If anyone wants a copy, let me know. Gotta shout out to Andy, Cliff, Sam, & Baddogg for the all the footage they took for me. I truely couldn't have done it without you, 'cuz I don't think my wife would have let me film it myself.

It was a good time & I actually remember most of it =DClick here to see the pictures. If anyone has more pictures of the event they'd like to share, let me know & i'll put 'em up.The next weekend, the J-side of the fam was gracious enough to throw a shower for or upcoming arrival. Here are the pictures from the shower.I want to thank everyone sofar for the tremendous amount of support and well wishes we've received. It makes me happy to think that the person you're bringing into the world will be surrounded by such good people. :-)

Gmail, Picasa updates (Google sure is busy).

Since I've starting using Google's Gmail, i've found that it's pretty handy. I dig the conversation-style structure, the spam filtering's pretty good, it's got POP forwarding now, and who can complain about a gigabyte of space. I run 2 webmail accounts presently (Yahoo mail is the other), and although Gmail is still technically in beta, it's better in many respects than existing webmail services. Gmail is by invitation only & they only hand out referrals to beta members. Presently, I've got referrals to give (6 at the time of this writing). So, if anyone wants a Gmail account, let me know. Also of note - Picasa, Google's photo organization software is up to version 2 & its still free. With the upgrade, they've added support for Gmail (duh.) and the ability to make a 'gift cd' of photos to give to friends & family. I can see that last function coming in handy in the next 8 weeks or so =). Click here to get Picasa 2.

Time to put 2004 into the history books. Here's to hoping everyone had a safe & happy New Year celebration. For our part, Anj & me were in Hays, celebrating with her parents, aunt & uncle. This year had a twist in that we were required to make our own party hats. I was sober enough to operate a camera, so I added some pictures of everyone's hat to the gallery. Check them out here.Best wishes to everyone for the year to come!
